I set off in the early morning to a dusty Namibian sunrise that shone over the flat, barren lands of Etosha National Park. I was in search for a lone male Elephant that could stand out from all the others. After a long search for this large animal, I finally spotted a lone bull in the far distance. Getting closer and closer, my prize awaited me. I admired its large, grey body as it began to walk slowly and gracefully past my vehicle and towards the sun. The contrast of its old and weathered skin enticed me to capture a photograph that brought out the skin’s weathered texture. As the inhospitable sun shone onto the skin of the Elephant, I could not help but take the photograph to capture the harsh textures that best described his life of struggle. Each crevice of the skin almost represents a hurdle in this individual’s life bringing feelings of compassion and integrity to the viewer.
The dramatic monochrome effect of this print expresses the hardship of an Elephant’s life that each of these giants faces day in and day out, wandering this great continent.
This print is beautifully presented in a conservation window mount and outlined with a classic black gallery frame. Over this print is a sheet of art glass that protects the print but shows off the photograph’s full potential. Fernley has created this print to bring a great deal of texture to any room or space. This bold frame works well with all modern furniture and will stand out from other framed prints.
