EAST AFRICA

African Lions, Masai Mara, Mark A Fernley

THE REUNION

Grandmother returns to her adopted cubs here in the Masai Mara. As the mother of these cubs had been killed many years ago, the grandmother had taken control to rase the cubs becoming successful  hunters.  As she is getting to the end of her life, the cubs return to care for her as she is unable to hunt forming this strong and affectionate bond.

MOTHER AND CUBS

Set in the heart of the Masai Mara, this ambitious mother lioness leaves her den for the very first time. As she leaves, her cubs follow her through the grassy plains trying to avoid unwanted predators watching in the distance. As we photographed the female and her tiny cubs, she gets closer to her awaiting pride that watch from a far distance.

A SUBTLE STARE
.

Located in the very northern region of the Masai Mara, this stunning lioness was spotted sitting in the short grasses of the open plains. During this early morning, the light was low, the air was crisp and the lighting was at a perfect angle to illuminate her face.

This open and clean back ground provided me with an isolated frame around the head, allowing her features to pop out.

THE FEAST
.

Located in Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, I got to photograph this remarkable African elephant as he waded through the swamps of this vast flatland beside Kilimanjaro. This incredible giant was photographed while feasting on the lush and green grasses that surrounded her giant body.

With an F4 Prime lens at hand, I was able to capture the subject and distance it from the surrounding background.

OUT OF THE STORM

Craig the super tusker, photographed walking out of a nearby storm next to Kilimanjaro, Kenya. This old, magnificent and famous large tusked elephant certainly brings this frame to life.

Hippo fight, Mark A Fernley

Two large male hippo's fight over territory in the shallow waters of River Ishasha, Uganda. These two males fought for many long photographic minutes where teeth and muscle become one.

What makes this shot most interesting is the connection of these two males that are joined by their artistically structured saliva, bringing motion to a single frame. The actual shot was taken to fully capture the individual on the left nicely as he was defending his pod. The rival male was positioned to be coming into the frame where there was partial cropping.

AT WAR

Craig The Elephant

KING OF AFRICA

Once again, Craig the super tusker walks towards the lens with his magnificently impressive tusks that dominate the frame while kicking up dust and hazing the surrounding trees.

Craig the famous super tusker photographed in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. This living fossil was tracked down and photographed after days  searching for him.
